This past weekend the Stormers took on the Chiefs in Hamilton (in New Zealand) in a Super 15 rugby match. The Stormers have been performing very well this season and are probably the strongest South African team in the 2011 Super 15 tournament. The Stormers dominated the match in the first half and were leading by 20 points to 3 at half time. The Chiefs came back with full force and managed to beat the Stormers by 30 points to 23 in the end. Sitiveni Sivivatu and Liam Messam scored the tries for the Chiefs. And referee Stuart Dickinson awarded them a penalty try. Stephen Donald kicked over 3 penalties and 3 conversions for his time. Peter Grant handled the Stormers’ kicking duties and their tries were scored by Schalk Burger and Gio Aplon. The Stormers were the only South African Super 15 team that lost a match this past weekend.
I am a Bulls fan, but this doesn’t mean that I don’t recognize a brilliant effort by an individual who happens to play for the Stormers. This brilliant try by Gio Aplon has to be one of the best tries of the 2011 Super 15 Season and has been selected to be featured in the Great Tries section of the Sport category on Running Wolf’s Rant:
For those of you who did not know, Gio Aplon was born in 1982 in Hawston in the Western Cape province of South Africa. He has been playing for Western Province since 2005 and has been playing for the Stormers since 2007. He was also part of the Springbok squad in 2010. The previous post in the Sport category featured the highlights of the South Africa vs New Zealand Tri Nations Test @ Ellis Park in 2000, feel free to check it out.
