On the 11th of February 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster prison (now called the Drakenstein Correctional Centre) in South Africa. He had been jailed for 27 years. After the African National Congress (ANC) won first ever democratic election in South Africa in 1994 he was sworn in as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
I honestly can’t believe that it has been 20 years since this day occurred in history. I did not see this footage on television at the time it was broadcast because the power was out on the day of Mandela’s release in the little town (in Limpopo Province) where I was staying at the time. I remember seeing the report about his release on SABC news when the power finally came back on later on that day. My previous post, Quotes – Part 22 – Nelson Mandela features quotes from this historic figure.
This video is footage of Nelson Mandela walking free for the first time in 27 years.
