Inspiring Career Advice for Young South African Women

Women’s Month is the perfect time to spotlight the trailblazers, innovators, and leaders who are shaping South Africa’s business landscape.

It’s also an opportunity to inspire the next generation of female professionals with practical advice from women who’ve navigated the challenges, carved their own paths, and achieved success on their terms.

Career Advice for South African Women

5 dynamic South African women share their most valuable lessons for thriving in the workplace

Find Your Voice and Trust It

For Jacaranda FM media personality Rozanne McKenzie, confidence is one of the most powerful tools a young professional can build.

“My piece of advice for young business professionals would be to not be afraid of your opinion,” she says. “If you’re in a room and you have something valuable to contribute, speak up. Your perspective might change the situation, shift how something is viewed, or even alter the thinking of one other person in the room.”

Rozanne admits that in her early career, she lacked the confidence to back her own opinions. Today, she encourages young professionals to trust their instincts: “Don’t be afraid to make your voice heard – your words may matter more than you think.”

Build a Safe Zone

Award-winning radio personality and author Carol Ofori believes success is easier to achieve when you have the right people in your corner.

“Form a safe zone. It’s really a network of people who truly have your best interests at heart,” she explains. “These are women who are not intimidated by your growth and who share wisdom without feeling threatened.”

According to Carol, this safe zone should be a space where you can be vulnerable and honest about your insecurities, knowing you’ll get advice that helps you move forward. “They will challenge you, celebrate you, and push you to take the next step with confidence.”

The Art of Balance

For Faziela Saheb, Sales Manager at Air France-KLM, success is not just about climbing the corporate ladder – it’s also about maintaining balance.

“My biggest piece of advice is to be intentional with your time,” she says. “Work will always be there, but your health, relationships, and personal well-being are what sustain you.”

She stresses that boundaries are essential: “Saying ‘no’ to a late-night email doesn’t make you less committed – it makes you better equipped to show up as your best self.” Faziela adds that balance isn’t about perfection: “Some weeks your career will demand more, other weeks your personal life will. The key is making sure neither side is neglected for too long.”

Be Direct. Be Kind. Be Unshakeable.

Mandy Davis, Co-Managing Director at Penquin, leads with a mix of clarity and compassion.

“Tell the truth early, even when it’s uncomfortable. Have the difficult conversations, stand firm when you’re right, and be willing to admit when you’re wrong,” she advises.

For Mandy, strong leadership lies in providing clarity on expectations, holding others accountable, and doing so with kindness. “Kindness is not weakness – it’s a powerful leadership style when paired with clarity.”

Resilience Beats Talent

TV personality and entrepreneur Roxy Burger believes grit matters more than genius.

“I don’t think it’s the most talented or the smartest people who succeed,” she says. “It’s the ones who are the most tenacious and resilient. Success is often just a waiting game.”

Her advice is simple: keep pushing forward, no matter the setbacks. “Hard work beats talent any day. And if you’re lucky enough to have both? Then you’re destined for greatness.”

Lessons for the Next Generation

From finding your voice and building a supportive network to setting boundaries, leading with clarity, and embracing resilience, these women prove that there’s no single path to success.

This Women’s Month, take their words to heart: speak up, surround yourself with support, protect your well-being, lead with kindness, and never give up. The journey may not always be smooth, but as these trailblazers show, it’s worth every step.
