Following on the success of their 2020 single, “Simunye”, Indie Rock band, Cherry Vynil has released “Lights”. It’s a song of inspiration and hope for the future of our amazing, diverse nation.
Following the success of their debut single and drawing inspiration from the all-time favorite band, Coldplay, Cherry Vinyl asks the question: “What is the meaning of Life?”

“Some find it in the wind, others from the waves of the ocean, maybe even the dust in the dessert. Our distant ancestors looked to the stars to guide them to where they wanted to go. When we look at the stars, we are looking to our past but also our future.”
“Lights” is about hope for the future, the present, the now. We all have a journey. So look up and look forward. The Lights will guide you home.
More info about Cherry Vynil
This Cape Town based Indie Rock band started out in June 2008, premiering onstage at the V&A Waterfront shortly following their establishment – their first album, Busking Cape Town, launched in 2015. Cherry Vynil performs regularly at many hotspots – Mojo Market in Sea Point, Jack Black Breweries, Kapstadt Brauhaus, Aces & Spades, Jackson Hall at Grand West Casino and Snowflake in Potchefstroom. The band has shared the stage with South Africa’s much-loved bands Freshlyground and Prime Circle.
Frontman Vickus Horne tells us the story behind the band’s name
“When we had to think of a band name, a friend of mine mentioned that his friends had a band in the UK called ‘Paper Radio’, I really liked the contrast of the two words and started playing with names like “Cherry Velvet” and “Vinyl Cherries.” In the end Cherry Vynil stood out and we went with that. When designing our first logo, the spelling accidentally came out “Cherry Vynil” instead of the traditional “Vinyl” we decided back then that this was a twist of fate and kept this ‘backward’ spelling.”
