How Editors Can Speed Up Editing

How can editors speed up the editing process? It is difficult to say exactly how long it takes to edit 1000 words because there are many factors that affect the time taken to edit. But it is simple to say that it is not as fast as many people think it is. Many editors took more than a few days to edit the manuscripts given to them by their clients.

The most important factor in determining how long it will take to edit a book is how many words it is. Obviously, an 80,000 words book will take longer to edit than a 40,000 words book. It usually takes editors around six weeks to edit an 80,000 words book, but it can vary from editor to editor.

    Editing 1000 words

Why does editing take so long?

Editing is no joke. It is a complex and thorough procedure. An editor goes through the entire book at least thrice, looking at it from different aspects every time. During every read, the editor is looking for details and will stop to check for typos, spelling errors, grammar errors and add his own ideas and items to enhance the quality of the content. Every read, the editor will take its due time. If the editor speeds things up, they might miss important things.

Another factor affecting the time taken to edit words is which level of editing is required. Different levels of editing require different periods of time. For developmental editing, an editor takes an hour to edit 1-5 pages, each containing 250 words.

For heavy copy-editing, it can take up to an hour for 2-5 pages. 5-10 pages of basic copy editing can be done in an hour, and proofreading takes an hour for 9-13 pages. Many skilled and experienced editors can copy edit a clean document at the rate of 15000 words per hour.

However, this general time duration may vary according to other factors such as the focus and concentration of the editor. As a general rule, it takes up to 1 hour to edit 1000 words.

These are some general observations, and editing may take longer in real. It may take longer if the manuscript is very technical, has many errors, and is written by a writer whose first language is not English.

The editor may be working a part-time job or have multiple projects to attend to, because of which he will have a few hours each week to work on the manuscript, requiring more weeks to complete editing.

Even those editors that work full time only work for five hours per day. Due to the nature of the work, working for more than five hours can produce harmful effects on health. It also becomes very difficult to concentrate after focusing for 5 hours. You can easily find full-time copy editors for hire.

How long should I give for editing?

When you give your manuscript to the editor, he will tell you a better estimate of the time required to complete editing your manuscript. You should negotiate with them and agree with them before finalizing the project. The majority of the editors have long waiting lists, which is why you should contact an editor beforehand.

What can the editor do to speed things up?

If you are an editor, here are a few strategies for effective and quick editing. These tips will help you edit 1000 words quickly.

    1.  Leave the document alone for a while

It can be hard to stay away from the manuscript when you have a line of projects piled up, and the deadline is getting nearer. But if you have been working on the same manuscript for hours or many days, it is a good idea to let it sit for a while.

Working on the same document for days and hours increases the chances of you missing our mistakes. You can shift between projects and documents, or if you have time, simply set aside the work and do another activity.

Taking breaks can refresh your mind and give you a new perspective. If you are on a tight deadline, simply taking a fifteen minutes break can help.

    2. Remove all the distractions

If you are working remotely, it is important that you find yourself in a quiet room because concentration and focus are vital to editing. There should be made distractions and background noise. Sit in a quiet place away from your phone and access the internet.

    3. Review your document in stages

Divide your editing into stages. Start off with structural editing by assessing the overall flow of the content of the manuscript. You can add in, remove, and alter any text you feel like. The next step is line editing. Here you need to focus on each and every line to display your idea properly.

Check each line for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, typos, word choice, sentence structure, and punctuation. Do it one by one because if you try to do all the things together, you will most likely lose focus and increase the chances of missing out on mistakes. The next stage is copy editing. This involves polishing the sentences and enhancing their quality.

    4. Read what you are editing loudly

Reading the manuscript aloud while editing can help you fasten the editing procedure. Reading aloud helps you stay focused and also gives you an idea of how each sentence sounds. It can help you pick up rough transitions and missing words. Also, if a sentence sounds grammatically wrong, you will know at once.

According to studies, reading out loud is more effective than reading to yourself silently because when you read to yourself silently, you can miss out words, add your own words and make corrections unconsciously.

    5. Change the format

Staring at a black and white screen for hours can reduce focus and concentration. You can spice things up by changing the text format. When you keep looking at the same font, same color, same location, and same context, your brain starts to miss out on mistakes by merging similar experiences. You can try changing the size, style, and color of the font.

    6. Track your progress

Always keep a watch on yourself and track your progress. Set small goals for the day and try to achieve them in the given time period.
