South African indie rock artist SonOfOld has unveiled his much-anticipated album, Echoes from a Silent Hill, today. Produced by acclaimed producer Theo Crous and featuring contributions from Foo Fighters’ keyboardist Rami Jaffee, the album seamlessly fuses alternative rock, folk elements, and atmospheric soundscapes.

Echoes from a Silent Hill weaves together introspective lyrics with a blend of alternative rock and folk influences, creating an emotionally resonant soundscape. With its diverse range of styles and moods, the album stands out within the indie rock genre.

Notable Tracks on SonOfOld’s Echoes from a Silent Hill

1. “Kaymen Eyes”

The lead single offers a pop-infused sound with a catchy chorus and rich harmonies reminiscent of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. Theo Crous’ production balances a classic pop feel with modern sensibilities.

2. “Solo”

This track originated from a spontaneous session in Nic Olsen’s bedroom, built around a beat and a repetitive chord progression. Olsen reflects, “I just pressed record and started talking.” With a hopeful chorus and Radiohead-like effects, the song touches on finding belonging amidst chaos, enhanced by Rami Jaffee’s signature keyboard work.

3. “Sunshine”

An upbeat track recalling Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle with You,” complete with hand claps and an infectious energy. Hawaiian guitar, keys by Rami Jaffee, and backing vocals by Theo Crous elevate this “ode to restrained sobriety,” leaving listeners with the uplifting mantra, “Don’t forget the sunshine, baby.”

4. “Take Me Down the River”

A reflective piece on letting go and embracing life’s unpredictability. Olsen lyrically explores the idea of surrendering to life’s natural flow with lines like, “Don’t take me down the road, take me down the river.”

Produced by Theo Crous, known for his work on over 80 albums, Echoes from a Silent Hill also features contributions from drummer Florian Schanze of L.A. punk band Obliterans, along with multi-instrumentalist Rami Jaffee. The album is a sonic journey bridging the past and present, drawing influences from Beck, Jane’s Addiction, and Neil Young.

Nic Olsen, the driving force behind SonOfOld, is a seasoned figure in South Africa’s alternative rock scene. He first gained prominence as the lead vocalist of the early 2000s band Perez, earning critical recognition and multiple South African Music Award nominations.

His success with Perez, along with his songwriting contributions to The Parlotones – most notably the platinum hit “Push Me to the Floor”—solidified his reputation as a gifted songwriter and musician.

Since launching SonOfOld, Olsen has released several critically acclaimed albums, including Change is How You Feel and 3% Baby, which highlighted his skill in blending acoustic pop with indie rock elements.

The 2011 release of The Wolf Album, produced by the legendary Steve Albini, marked a creative high point, infusing raw energy into SonOfOld’s music.

In recent years, Olsen has continued to evolve, with his 2020 self-titled album and 2022 EP Ghosts receiving praise for their originality and cohesive style.
