The Fismits Release New Single: “Scars”

South African indie-alternative rock project The Fismits have returned with their latest single, “Scars,” marking the first chapter of their upcoming EP Falling Joy, set for release on 26 June 2026. Accompanied by a music video, the track finally delivers the definitive recorded version of a song that has lived in the band’s history for nearly three decades.

Originally written in the mid-1990s by Bruce Barrett during his time with Mark Biagio in The Mind Theatre, “Scars” became a staple in live performances thanks to its shifting dynamics and distinctive rhythmic pulse. Now, Biagio – who leads The Fismits – has revisited the track, giving it the full studio treatment it never previously received.

A Song Reborn with Purpose

Reworked and reconstructed during recording sessions in 2024 and 2025 at Dirty Badger Music, “Scars” emerges with renewed emotional depth and clarity. Produced, mixed and mastered by Mark Biagio himself, the track balances tension and melody with a restrained alternative rock sensibility that feels both reflective and immediate.

Rather than leaning on nostalgia, this version of “Scars” reframes the past with a sense of resolution – bringing closure to a song that has quietly endured over the years.

Falling Joy EP: Revisiting the Past Through a Modern Lens

“Scars” is the first of three singles leading into Falling Joy, a project that revisits Barrett’s mid-1990s material through a contemporary perspective. The EP will also feature upcoming singles “Independence” and “When,” before closing with the darker, introspective “Too Small A Word.”

The project isn’t about reliving the past – it’s about reinterpreting it. Each track retains its original urgency while embracing a more mature, measured approach shaped by time and experience.

The Evolution of The Fismits

Formed in 2016, The Fismits began as a three-piece band before evolving into the solo creative vehicle of Mark Biagio. The project has steadily built a catalogue that includes the EP Anywhere (2017), the album Before the Hindsight (2020), and the 2024 single “Halen.”

Biagio’s musical roots stretch back over 30 years, with early collaborations alongside Bruce Barrett in The Mind Theatre laying the foundation for much of the material now being revisited. Over time, those early ideas have been carried through rehearsals, live shows and private recordings – only now finding their final form.

A Sound Built on Experience and Reinvention

Across The Fismits catalogue, Biagio blends alternative rock sensibilities with subtle experimentation. Tracks like “Scars” showcase off-kilter rhythms and layered melodies, while other material explores electronic textures and retro influences.

His production style reflects both technical precision and emotional authenticity – delivering music that feels polished without losing its raw, human core.

More Than Nostalgia – A Statement of Continuity

At its heart, The Fismits is about continuity: bridging youth and adulthood, past ambition and present clarity. What began as a collaborative band project has evolved into a deeply personal body of work that honours its origins while moving forward with intent.

With “Scars,” The Fismits offer more than just a single – they deliver a long-overdue piece of their story, finally captured the way it was meant to be heard.
