South African indie-alternative project The Fismits is set to unveil their latest single and music video, “Independence,” on 8 May. As the second offering from the highly anticipated EP Falling Joy (arriving 26 June), the track builds on the emotional groundwork laid by the previous single, “Scars.”
This time around, listeners are treated to a sonically spirited exploration, trading traditional structures for electronic textures, looping rhythms, and a vibrant new-wave energy.

From the 90s Archive to Modern Reimagining
The history of “Independence” is as compelling as its sound. Originally penned in the early 1990s as part of The Mind Theatre archive, the song spent decades in flux, refusing to settle into a permanent arrangement. It wasn’t until Mark Biagio revisited the track that it found its true form.
Moving far beyond its initial British indie roots, Biagio has transformed the song into an atmospheric blend of alternative rock and synth-driven layers, embodying the very creative freedom the title suggests.
Evolution Through Experimentation
Recorded throughout 2024 and 2025 at Dirty Badger Music, the production of “Independence” was a masterclass in instinct over preservation. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Biagio himself, the track reflects a deliberate pivot toward the unpredictable.
By favoring experimentation over rigid adherence to the past, the song has evolved into a dynamic piece of music that moves confidently between quiet restraint and powerful release.

Completing the Falling Joy Arc
Falling Joy serves as a bridge between eras, reimagining Bruce Barrett’s mid-1990s material through a contemporary lens of experience and reflection. While “Scars” captured the project’s heart, “Independence” expands its horizons with newfound movement and color.
The journey continues with the upcoming third single, “When,” leading up to the full EP release on 26 June, which will also feature the tracks “Falling Joy” and “Too Small A Word.”
The Evolution of a Singular Creative Vision for The Fismits
Since forming in 2016, The Fismits have developed a rich discography, including the 2017 EP Anywhere, the 2020 album Before the Hindsight, and the 2024 single “Halen.”
What started as a traditional three-piece band has matured into Biagio’s singular creative outlet. Today, the project stands as a testament to emotional honesty and independence, seamlessly blending the echoes of the past with a forward-thinking, exploratory spirit.
