Philadelphia-based Americana project The Hill has returned with a poignant new folk single, “Catch”. Following the release of the 2025 LP Noble Station, the new track serves as a heartfelt in memoriam to Valerie, the late mixed-breed basset hound of singer-songwriter Jon Kowit.
While Jon Kowit typically prefers to leave his songwriting open to interpretation, he notes that the deeply personal nature of “Catch” warrants an exception.
The track is his second song dedicated to dogs, exploring the profound and lasting impact they have on our lives. “Dogs impact our lives in so many ways, how can they not be written about?” he asks.
From Behind the Scenes to Global Reach
Before the debut of The Hill in 2024, Jon Kowit worked strictly behind the scenes at Ascend Records. His transition to the forefront began when he reconnected with indie multi-instrumentalist Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner for what was supposed to be a single collaboration.
That session quickly evolved into the 12-track debut album Get In Line, followed closely by Noble Station.
Since then, the project has gained significant traction far beyond North America. Jon Kowit describes the gratifying experience of seeing the music travel thousands of miles, tracking Shazam results from listeners in cafes across global cities like Johannesburg and Brisbane.
The Studio Team
“Catch” features a robust lineup of indie-folk veterans. Produced by Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner – who also lent his talents on steel guitar and backing vocals – the track includes John Cunningham on guitar, bass, and piano, alongside Mark Scheiber on drums and percussion. Jon Kowit anchors the song with his rhythm guitar and lead vocals.
