South African singer-songwriter Amy Tjasink returns to the music scene with her radiant new single, “Shadows of the Sun”.
This deeply personal release was shaped by her father’s life-changing stroke and the enduring bond they share. The track also serves as the lead single from her highly anticipated upcoming album, Valley Girl, which is set for release on 14 August 2026.

Amy’s father, her lifelong supporter and musical inspiration, survived a stroke that permanently altered his life. While everything changed in an instant, the creative dreams they once shared remained unshaken.
Rather than focusing on loss, the song leans heavily into legacy, resilience, and the quiet strength of carrying a loved one’s belief forward.
A Cinematic Metaphor for Guidance and Love
The song’s imagery was powerfully shaped by a creative reference to The Lion King, specifically the iconic scene where Mufasa teaches Simba about the balance between light and shadow.
For Amy, this became a beautiful metaphor for guidance, growth, and finding your path, echoing the way her father’s love continues to guide her through life’s scariest unknowns.
Written in December 2025 with a guitar in hand, the song came to Amy Tjasink during a moment of quiet reflection while surrounded by nature. Immersed in the natural world, she channeled a story that had long been waiting to be told, transforming raw family trauma into an uplifting artistic statement.
African Rhythms Meet Indie Folk Textures
Sonically, “Shadows of the Sun” is a vibrant fusion of rich African rhythms, indie folk textures, and uplifting pop melodies.
The result is a signature sound that feels both deeply rooted and expansive – distinctly South African, yet universally resonant. Amy Tjasink notes that she wanted the track to feel like a journey that lifts the listener and represents hope, growth, and the choice to keep moving forward.
Following the massive success of her breakout hit, “Feels Like Mzansi” – which climbed to #1 on Good Hope FM and saw her perform live at the SAFTAs – this new era marks a powerful next chapter. Where her previous work celebrated national identity and home, this single steps into a far more intimate and vulnerable space.

A Compelling Voice in South African Music
With this release, Amy Tjasink continues to establish herself as one of the country’s most compelling musical voices. Her unique ability to blend authentic storytelling with emotional honesty ensures that her music reaches far beyond simple entertainment.
“Shadows of the Sun” is an invitation to celebrate the invisible threads that connect us to the people who shape us. As anticipation builds for Valley Girl, Amy Tjasink reminds us that even in the shadows, there is always a way to reach toward the light.
