Africa’s leading documentary festival, Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, returns for its 28th edition from 4 to 14 June 2026.
This year’s line-up is particularly prestigious, featuring two early Oscar contenders that will see their African premieres at the festival.
Attendees can look forward to TUTU, winner of the 2026 Berlin Peace Film Prize, and “Nuisance Bear”, the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner that explores the disappearing Arctic habitat.
Festival director Mandisa Zitha describes the event as an opportunity to slow down and look behind the headlines.
With screenings and masterclasses taking place in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria, the festival remains a vital space for understanding our world through a cinematic lens.
Powerful Opening Night and Local World Premieres at Encounters 2026
The festival opens with the African premiere of Truck Mama, directed by Zipporah Nyaruri. The film provides a multifaceted portrait of Eva, a female truck driver navigating the Kenya-Sudan route while balancing the challenges of single parenting.

Beyond the international highlights, Encounters remains a champion of local stories, hosting four significant world premieres from South African filmmakers.
- Notes from the Underground traces the rich history of Cape hip hop.
- Marxism & Period Pains examines the intersection of gender and capitalism.
- The Hour After Midnight investigates the tragic death of Dr Neil Aggett.
- My Father’s Son follows a personal journey of discovery across continents and cultures.
From Global Icons to Human Rights
For those interested in high-profile figures, the program includes intimate looks at Elon Musk, Salman Rushdie, and the legendary musical duo Amadou & Mariam. Films like Elon Musk Unveiled – The Tesla Experiment and Knife: The Attempted Murder of Salman Rushdie offer deep dives into the lives of individuals who have shaped modern discourse and culture.
The festival also tackles urgent human rights issues with award-winning titles such as American Doctor, which follows medical professionals in Gaza, and Everybody to Kenmure Street, documenting community resistance against deportation in Glasgow.

These stories reflect a commitment to solidarity and justice, echoing the late Archbishop Tutu’s belief that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice.
The Return of Fan Favorites and Timely Dialogue at Encounters 2026
Acclaimed directors are returning to the Encounters stage this year. Nicole Shafer presents Mama-Demic, a look at the collapsing health system during the pandemic, while Sinéad O’Shea returns with All About the Money.
These films sit alongside topical documentaries exploring feminist opposition in Iran, the return of looted remains to Sri Lanka, and the ongoing migrant crisis.
Encounters 2026 will run at various iconic venues including the Labia Theatre in Cape Town, The Bioscope in Johannesburg, and Brooklyn Commercial in Pretoria.
It remains supported by a wide network of partners including the Bertha Foundation, Netflix, and the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, ensuring that documentary cinema continues to thrive on the continent.
