South African EDM producer Undertone is back with his most daring release yet: “Non-Type Certified.” This release follows the global success of previous hits like “Kind of Love” and “Falling” (which lit up the airwaves from Café Mambo Ibiza to BBC Cambridge and Kiss FM).
“Non-Type Certified” is a Genre-Defying Sonic Experience
“Non-Type Certified” refuses to be boxed in. Emotionally rich and structurally unconventional, the track is built around a doo-wop/Motown-inspired vocal hook that struck a powerful chord with Undertone.
“This song was born from a feeling — the kind of raw emotion only a classic vocal can stir,” says Undertone. “I wanted to honour that vintage soul while completely flipping the framework around it.”
The title “Non-Type Certified” is a nod to its nonconformist design. The song transitions seamlessly between time signatures — from standard 4/4 to a waltz-like 3/4, back again, and then into 3/4 once more. Meanwhile, the bass riff evolves four times, adding to the track’s unpredictable and immersive nature.
Clocking in at 123 BPM, the track balances rhythmic complexity with meticulous production choices. The main melody is driven by an arpeggiated synth line, supported by analog-style percussion that complements bold Motown trumpet accents.
Open and closed hi-hats interact in layered harmony, creating a groove that’s both nostalgic and forward-thinking.
Even the vocals are crafted to reflect emotional movement: the first verse is sped up, while the final verse is slowed down — each set in contrasting time signatures to mirror the ebb and flow of feeling.
