Today sees the official release of Zebraman’s debut music video for their single, “Sunlight”. “Sunlight” was released as a single in 2021, and is an eclectic offering with signature Zebraman elements such as hard hitting drums, an evocative synth bassline and a mixture of exotic and retro sounding keyboards.
The music video was shot and directed by Estiaan Esterhuyse – a seasoned videographer and director who’s concept for the video, passion for the single and vision resonated with the band seeing as “Sunlight” is the track they love most as a band. The video was shot in Potchefstroom in an abandoned roof of an old beer factory where the team created a massive dark room for the shoot.
Zebraman comment on making the video for “Sunlight”
“We were really keen on collaborating with a good videographer and from the offset decided they would have a lot of creative freedom in the processes of the video. When Estiaan pitched his idea over coffee, our initial reactions were very positive. We realised that a lot of the symbolic content we brought to the music, was being supported by his ideas. There was also a richness which these ideas added to the video.”
Estiaan came up with the idea of two actors and a liquid gold dripping substance tying the narrative of the video together, which completely supported the band’s concept of “Sunlight” in general. He also had great ideas about the colour scheme and aesthetic of the video which they felt would contribute to the vibe of the music.
“There is a deeply entangled relationship between the song, musically and lyrically, and it is now finally supported through the video. The movements and aesthetic of the video truly astounded us and was a remarkable addition and enrichment of the song.”
The video features actor Daniel Asiwe capturing the mood of serious longing whilst captivating the audience with a seriousness through his acting. Actress Anzel Grobler plays the role of the mystical ephemeral woman. There is a wonderful chemistry between the two actors portrayed in scenes where the main character reminisces about his loved one, unable to get to her.
The viewer sees the woman dancing around, but only through projected footage. Her ephemeral presence is felt and we realise he misses her material being. Finally, she is there. The gold substance dripping off of her lips, our protagonist invites her into the rain for a dance.
