South African anthropologist, singer, and songwriter Birdie has officially returned with “Mananga”, a powerful folk, African jazz, and Afro-soul lead single.
The track offers a profound exploration of belonging, land, and memory, paving the way for her highly anticipated sophomore album, Matimu.

Birdie is Redefining the Wilderness
Meaning “wilderness” in Xitsonga, “Mananga” is a deeply reflective track that challenges the notion of the landscape as an empty or barren space. Instead, it reveals the land as a place alive with history, social ties, memory, and belonging.
The track speaks to the continuity between generations while questioning who has the authority to define a place and who is deemed worthy of belonging there.
The song opens with an ethereal, nature-inspired soundscape, evoking a distant call before drawing the listener inward. Traditional African storytelling meets contemporary musical language as Xitsonga musical expressions seamlessly converge with jazz and Afro-soul.
The composition is further elevated by the jazz sensibility of emerging South African pianist, composer, and producer DiTeboho Kobedi, who brings rich texture and depth to the track.

The Intersection of Art and Anthropology
For Birdie, music exists within a much broader creative and intellectual practice. Her multidisciplinary work spans performance, research, and anthropology, with a specific focus on contemporary human-environment interactions within protected areas in post-apartheid South Africa.
“This body of work has been a labour of love,” Birdie explains. “I am excited to finally share it after spending a long time in the studio, in a period of hibernation, reflection and gathering the insights needed to deepen and strengthen these stories, contextually, theoretically, as well as sonically.”
A Heritage Month Milestone
Releasing the track during Heritage Month holds deep symbolic meaning for the artist, serving as an invitation to reflect on history, identity, and the stories that shape South African heritage.
Following her 2024 single “Nghwenyama”, this release marks a brand-new chapter in her ongoing exploration of the relationship between people and their environment.
