Handwritten Notes has just released a new single entitled, “Close To The Sun”. It is no secret that the concept of the song originates from the story of Icarus, symbolizing the dangers of overreaching, desiring too much, and ultimately getting burned.
The inspiration was drawn from Pieter Bruegel’s depiction of Icarus’s tale. This painting has always been moving, as it portrays how, despite Icarus’s self-glorification and dramatic fall, the world continues on, almost indifferent to his fate.

This is a hard truth to accept—that life moves forward, regardless of how intense one’s own story may seem. The concept inspired a song, as it resonates with many people who have their own versions of Icarus’s story.
Handwritten Notes had a personal connection, which fueled the creation of the song
Recording the song was an incredibly enjoyable process. Initially, only the guitar and vocal melody were in place, but as time went on, experimentation led the song through several transformations before it reached its final version.
Brendan Louw and Stefan Moller played pivotal roles in shaping the song, recording the guitar and bass parts. Liam Coetzee then added the finishing touch by recording the drums.
