Cape Town-based Afrikaans rapper, Middelvinger, marks his triumphant returns with “Alles Is Gecancel!”, his first release for 2021 alongside his longtime friends and collaborators Francois van Coke and Hunter Kennedy (Fokofpolisiekar, Die Heuwels Fantasties).
Directed, filmed and edited by Michael Ellis, who also directed Middelvinger’s “In Die Begin Bongathon” video, “Alles Is Gecancel” is a comment on the absurdity of extreme forms of Cancel Culture, a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles.
Michael Ellis explains
“Getting the opportunity to put a music video together was a lekker break from my usual line of video work. I decided to chuck myself in the deep end and take on all the major roles with Sonja Myburgh [Fokof Lager brand manager] helping out with some of the production. The main concept was to take a sarcastic approach to the narrative and let the guys go balls to the wall with the performance. Pretty straight forward really.”
Middelvinger flexes his trademark rap rhythm on “Alles Is Gecancel”, but we also get to see him behind the drum kit for the first time since his old rock ‘n’ roll group, Dead Lucky, disbanded in 2015.
Middelvinger comments on the music video for “Alles Is Gecancel!”
“I teamed up with my friend Michael Ellis after a long time to shoot a lekker video, he shot all of our Dead Lucky stuff back in the day. The video does the song justice because it’s edgy, fast-paced, and in your face. I wouldn’t say that everybody stayed very sober for the day of shooting, but we got everything done that we needed to get done, on the day that we needed to get it done.”

I have to say that this probably the coolest up-beat track by a South African artist that has been released in 2021. I’m curious to see what Middelvinger is going to throw our way in the coming months of 2021.
