Acclaimed South African artist Muzi releases the official music video for “Uhlanga,” featuring Zoe Modiga, on 1 May. The track is taken from his upcoming album ELECTRIC ZULULAND, out 15 May 2026.
Inspired by Nguni mythology, “Uhlanga” tells a story of human origin rooted in the belief that life emerged from the reeds. Muzi translates this idea into a powerful audio-visual experience, blending natural elements, storytelling, and modern production into something that feels both grounded and contemporary.

The Mythology of the Reeds
“Uhlanga is the Zulu word for reeds. In Nguni mythology that’s where people come from,” says Muzi. “Our garden of Eden. So I imagined what that start, that early world creation process would sound like. It’s why the song starts the way it does, in a heavy storm. Then obviously in this scenario, we would need a goddess. Mother Earth. And that’s where Zoe comes in.”
Muzi, a long-time fan of Modiga’s bravery in her artistry, sought to make this first collaboration feel truly magical, positioning her as the central figure in this reimagined creation story.

Muzi is Fusing Zulu Identity with Electronic Innovation
Originally from Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal, Muzi has established himself as one of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists. He is renowned for fusing electronic music with Zulu identity, creating a catalogue that is both locally rooted and globally relevant.
His work has earned international acclaim, leading to significant collaborations including a feature on the *Damon Albarn*-led project Africa Express Presents: Egoli and an official remix of “Orphans” for Coldplay from their album Everyday Life. With ELECTRIC ZULULAND, he continues to push the boundaries of African electronic music.
