Singer songwriter Matt Shaw steps into brighter territory with his latest release, “Sunny Days,” a track that captures the rhythm, warmth and laid back spirit of a South African summer. Filled with feel good energy and sun soaked melodies, the single becomes an instant soundtrack for long golden days and easy coastal living.
“Sunny Days” began as a spur of the moment idea in a friends’ WhatsApp group. Shaw challenged himself to write it quickly, aiming for simplicity rather than symbolism, and focusing on that classic holiday feeling when the sun is out, the beach is calling and an ice cold drink before noon somehow makes perfect sense.
The final result is a joyful anthem built on an irresistible groove and a fiery saxophone solo that seals its festive glow. The song marks a shift from Shaw’s earlier introspective work that explored themes of love and anxiety. He explains that sometimes music doesn’t need to solve anything, it just needs to make you feel good.
Produced in partnership with Christopher Paterson and Steven Watters from Crescent Recording in Gqeberha, “Sunny Days” brings together a talented group of local musicians. The track features saxophonist Joash, producer Sloani and backing vocalists Monique van Der Ham and Russell Sneyd.

“It was amazing to have so many people I love be part of such a fun project,” Shaw says. He reflects on the familiar South African holiday arc that begins on the beach and ends around a braai, hoping the song becomes something people can build memories around while they dance along.
