The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) returns this winter as Africa’s premiere classical music gathering, masterfully combining the innovative sounds of our present day with the timeless icons of the orchestral past.
More info about The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival
Each year in July, the convergence of some of the world’s finest virtuosos in the historic town of Stellenbosch provides a clean slate for the festival’s visionary Artistic Director, Nina Schumann, to programme world-class repertoires completely without limitation.

The upcoming iteration promises to push artistic boundaries while maintaining the high performance standards that global classical enthusiasts have come to expect from this landmark cultural event.
For connoisseurs who relish the rare opportunity to hear cutting-edge, contemporary classical music executed at an international standard, the prospects for the 2026 lineup are mouthwatering. The programming sees the return of works by Jörg Widmann, Philip Glass, and Olli Mustonen.
These legendary figures are all composers whose groundbreaking works consistently grace the stages of Europe’s top-tier music festivals, and whose challenging music was originally brought to South African soil by the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival in recent years.
Their inclusion guarantees a sonic experience that bridges avant-garde structures with deep emotional resonance.
11 South African Premieres and a Major National Commission
This year, the SICMF is cementing its reputation as an engine of musical discovery by presenting no fewer than 11 South African premieres. Audiences will be treated to first-time local performances of works by celebrated composers such as Pavel Karmanov, Ante Grgin, and Fazil Say. Say’s acclaimed trio piece, Space Jump, stands as a wonderful example of contemporary Impressionism.
Crafted by one of the most eccentric concert pianist-composers alive today, this specific work will be brought to life by a powerhouse trio consisting of Daniel Rowland on violin, Maja Bogdanovic on cello, and Nina Schumann at the piano.
A major highlight of the festival will be the world premiere of this year’s official commission, written by the young, award-winning South African composer Owen Dalton.
Titled A Tough Tale, this complex piece will be performed by a massive ensemble comprising almost the entirety of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival faculty artists, bolstered by a selected group of top-tier festival student participants.
The ensemble will be led by the precise baton of conductor Xandi van Dijk. Adding a profound literary layer to the performance, Tereska Muishond will narrate her own poetry alongside iconic verses by Antjie Krog and Mongane Wally Serote, all intricately integrated into Dalton’s musical composition.
Balancing Contemporary Edge with Sublime Standard Repertoire
None of this groundbreaking new music would enjoy its prestigious status if it weren’t framed by the context of the sublime standard repertoire that supports it. Nina Schumann has once again done a brilliant job of seamlessly integrating the historic with the modern, ensuring the festival remains highly accessible.
For patrons who attend to get their vital fix of live traditional classics, a major drawcard will be Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds.
This timeless chamber piece will be performed by a stellar lineup featuring Titus Underwood on oboe, YaoGuang Zhai on clarinet, Julia Harguindey on bassoon, José Garcia Gutiérrez on French horn, and Pieter Grobler at the piano.
The standard repertoire stable is packed with heavy-hitting masterpieces this year. Attendees can look forward to a dramatic reading of César Franck’s dark and passionate piano quintet, Johannes Brahms’s Op. 115 Quintet presented in a special arrangement curated specifically for strings, and Felix Mendelssohn’s effervescent concerto for violin and piano.
By anchoring the experimental works alongside these beloved monuments of classical music, the festival creates an educational and deeply moving environment where different eras of human creativity converse with one another.
Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival Grand Orchestral Finales and Ticket Information
The festival, which runs from 3 to 12 July inclusive, will conclude with an expansive weekend of orchestral concerts showcasing the festival’s hard-working student participants performing alongside elite concerto soloists.
Featured soloists for these grand finales include David Cohen (cello), Miclen LaiPang (violin), Emanuil Ivanov (piano), and Siwoo Kim (violin).
The Festival Symphony Orchestra will tackle Gustav Mahler’s monumental First Symphony under the baton of conductor Michael Repper. Meanwhile, the Festival Concert Orchestra, exploring rich romantic works by Tchaikovsky, Bruch, and Bizet, will be led by Karin Hendrickson.
Adding to the symphonic grandeur of the final weekend of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival is the newly formed Festival Symphonic Wind Orchestra. Under the expert baton of Liam Burden, this formidable wind ensemble will perform contemporary and challenging works by Philip Sparke, Eric Whitacre, Paul Heart, Lize Briel, and Martin Ellerby.
This multi-orchestra showcase provides a fitting, powerful conclusion to a week of intense musical pairing and cultural exchange.
