Three months since the unveiling of The Official South African Charts (TOSAC), the second phase of the rollout sees the launch of the Radio Charts.

In September TOSAC under the auspices of the Recording Industry of SA (RiSA) launched the local and international Streaming Singles Charts aggregated by BMAT music technology company, from three digital streaming platforms of Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. As TOSAC continues to grow, the focus is now on the Radio Charts as an additional leg of the charts.

    Radio Charts

Information for the Radio Charts is aggregated from the Radio Monitor service and is exclusively based on spins across all South African community, commercial, regional, national and public broadcaster radio stations to determine how the chart stacks up.

Jarrod Assenheim, Radiomonitor South Africa said: “We are very excited to be the official radio airplay data provider to The Official SA Music Charts. Radiomonitor is the industry standard airplay monitoring service used by labels and organisations around the world. As the leading airplay monitoring company in South Africa, we value our continued partnership with RISA, labels, publishers, Artists, composers, broadcasters and organisations. The launch of an official chart is an important milestone for the local music industry and will provide greater insights for the entire industry.”

Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of RiSA celebrated the news: “It’s an absolute pleasure for us to kick start the official SA Radio Charts. This is the growth we planned for TOSAC as we strive to provide a service to benefit music consumers and artists alike. It is also aimed at driving music consumption and the development of the industry. Radio continues to play a pivotal role as a vehicle to take music to the majority of our people and it was a no-brainer that TOSAC would provide a Radio Charts service.”

Sibisi reiterated that music consumers are spoiled for choice with access to local radio and international music charts, and the intention of TOSAC is to provide a platform that local music lovers can own and one that reflects their relationship with local and international music as well as their consumption patterns, irrespective of their taste in music.

What you can expect on the Radio Charts

Weekly Top 200 tracks of local and international songs that have been played on South African radio for that week.

Weekly Top 100 Local SA tracks of songs in which at least one of the credited artists is South African and have been played on local radio for that week.

How the Radio Charts will be aggregated

    • The Radio Charts will be published every Thursday at noon.
    • Only radio spins as aggregated by Radio Monitor are taken into account.
    • Currently no track exclusion policy or Accelerated Decline method is being applied.
    • Different versions of a track are aggregated to their corresponding original track, i.e radio edits, same song with additional featuring artists, DJ remixes (as long as the original artist is credited) and different language/country versions. Album covers are not aggregated to the original track.
