J Mahon has unveiled his highly anticipated album, Begin Again, Again, marking his debut release under Unique Records / Schubert Music Europe.

This carefully crafted collection represents a major milestone in Mahon’s artistic journey — a return to the immersive “true” album experience, reminiscent of teenage years spent lost in sound, headphones on, and imagination running wild.

J Mahon

Taking inspiration from the raw honesty of artists like Sparklehorse and Daniel Johnston, Mahon creates a vibrant yet reflective chamber pop soundscape.

Listeners who connect with the lush, cinematic sounds of Spiritualized or Sigur Rós will find much to love here. Yet it’s J Mahon’s soulful voice and poetic storytelling that truly define the project, drawing comparisons to songwriting legends such as Jeff Buckley, Townes Van Zandt, and Joanna Newsom.

J Mahon is revisiting the past and reimagining the present

Begin Again, Again is the first time J Mahon has returned to earlier material, pulling from demo recordings made between 2019 and 2023. Rather than creating new songs from scratch, he carefully reworked these fragments to preserve their raw, diary-like emotion — while infusing them with the maturity of an artist who’s evolved in sound and spirit.

The album was recorded over a year in collaboration with London-based producer Syd Kemp (Ulrika Spacek). Their partnership allowed the music to develop naturally, yielding arrangements that are at once intimate and expansive.

Perhaps the most defining moment of the album’s creation came just before recording began. Upon arriving in London, Mahon rented a rehearsal space containing only a piano — an instrument he had never played. Undeterred, he taught himself to play and transposed the entire album from guitar to piano. This remarkable feat of reinvention reflects his commitment to creative growth and authenticity in every performance.

Lyrically, Begin Again, Again is deeply personal. It confronts recovery from addiction, the fading bonds of childhood friendship, and the search for belonging — themes shaped by J Mahon’s own nomadic upbringing, having moved through more than 13 homes before finishing high school. Though the lyrics carry melancholy, the musical arrangements often bloom with euphoric hope, lifting the album toward a future full of promise.

With Begin Again, Again, J Mahon invites listeners into a world that feels both deeply introspective and broadly relatable. It’s an album made for long walks, late nights, and quiet moments of reflection. As he begins this new chapter with Unique Records / Schubert Music Europe, Mahon affirms his place as one of contemporary music’s most emotionally resonant voices — and a talent destined to connect with audiences worldwide.
