South Africa’s iconic herbal infusion, Rooibos, has earned a cameo in the much-anticipated Apple TV+ thriller Down Cemetery Road, starring screen legends Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson.
The British drama, adapted by Morwenna Banks from Mick Herron’s 2003 novel, follows art restorer Sarah Trafford (Wilson) and private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson) as they unravel a tense mystery in suburban Oxford.

In Season 1, Episode 3, titled “Filthy Work,” Zoë offers a cup of “rooi-bosch tea” to Denise, nicknamed “Wigwam,” providing a brief, humanising pause amid the suspense.
Rooibos: A Cultural and Literary Staple
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council, says every on-screen appearance of Rooibos is a meaningful nod to South Africa’s cultural footprint.
“It’s not just a drink, but a symbol of our nation’s unique biodiversity and the growing global embrace of homegrown flavours,” she explains.
Rooibos has a long-standing association with detective fiction, appearing in stories where moments of reflection and analysis are key.
From Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency to local crime novels by Deon Meyer, Rooibos often accompanies investigators piecing together complex puzzles.
“Writers may choose it for cultural authenticity or warmth, but its naturally caffeine-free profile and antioxidant content may also support mental clarity – perfect for any detective, fictional or real,” du Toit adds.
From the Cederberg to the World
Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) grows exclusively in South Africa’s rugged Cederberg fynbos and has become globally recognised for its mild flavour and versatility. Known internationally as “red bush tea,” “rooi-bosch,” or simply “bush tea,” it has established a foothold in Europe, North America, and Japan. Its appearances in literature and film help familiarise new audiences with this uniquely South African brew.
Du Toit says the Apple TV+ moment reflects Rooibos’ transition from a regional staple to a global culinary and lifestyle reference.
“Whether shared across a kitchen table or poured during a tense investigative breakthrough, Rooibos carries an understated symbolism. It represents calm thinking in complex moments, and increasingly, the world is taking notice.”
This cameo in Down Cemetery Road highlights how South Africa’s beloved red bush continues to gain recognition on screens worldwide, bringing a taste of home to international audiences.
