Martin Bester Shares His Thoughts on World Radio Day

World Radio Day is a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of radio—a medium that has continuously adapted and evolved in an ever-changing digital landscape. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected through technology, radio remains a cornerstone of live, personal communication.

Jacaranda FM’s Martin Bester, one of South Africa’s leading broadcasters, has witnessed first-hand the evolution of radio over the decades.

Martin Bester - World Radio Day

With a career marked by unforgettable moments on air and a deep commitment to genuine storytelling, he provides invaluable insights into how radio continues to thrive amid emerging technologies.

To celebrate World Radio Day on 13 February, Martin Bester reflects on his journey, the challenges and triumphs he’s encountered, and his vision for the future of radio.

Why do you think radio remains such an important medium in 2025?

“Radio has remained a relevant and vital medium because it has always embraced new technologies rather than resisting them. Elements like TV, CDs, tapes, online streaming, websites, and social media could all have been threats to the industry—but they never replaced it.”

“By working with these innovations and incorporating them into content delivery, radio has managed to stay both current and essential. Its openness to change is key to its power.”

How has radio shaped the person you are today?

“Radio has taught me invaluable lessons in one-on-one communication. Broadcasting feels like having a personal conversation with a single listener, and that personal touch has profoundly influenced how I approach every conversation, both on and off the air.”

What are some of your most memorable moments on air?

“There are so many. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to and interviewing a number of famous people, but the moments that stand out the most are those with our listeners. Whether it’s kids participating in our ‘Friday’s My Day’ segment or adults sharing insightful—and often hilarious—stories, those interactions truly shape my journey on air.”

What makes ‘Breakfast With Martin Bester’ such a hit with listeners?

“I’m incredibly grateful for the way our show has landed. It’s become a huge part of people’s mornings across Gauteng, North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and even beyond.”

“Our team is strong, each person knows exactly what they bring to the table, and we’re always on the lookout for fresh, relevant content. We work hard to make our listeners feel like part of our family—and that connection is what truly sets our show apart.”

What keeps you motivated after so many years in radio?

“The uniqueness of every broadcast. Every show is different. Every day brings new news and fresh topics. Social media has made it even easier to stay updated, and unpacking these conversations with our listeners is something I love doing. The live nature of radio keeps the energy high, and that’s what keeps me excited to deliver great content every morning.”

What type of radio do you enjoy listening to?

“Local radio is my favorite because it’s in tune with what’s happening both locally and globally. I appreciate presenters who blend humor with insightful content—those who create a sense of connection. That personal touch is what I aim to bring to my own broadcasts.”

What can listeners expect from ‘Breakfast With Martin Bester’ this year?

“We have some exciting plans. This year, we’re celebrating South African food culture and its global influences. From Italy and Ethiopia to Korea and Mozambique, we’ll be exploring diverse culinary experiences right here in our city.”

“Expect plenty of foodie adventures, surprises, and engaging content. Our goal is always to keep things fresh, and 2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year.”

What do you think radio will look like in the years to come?

“Radio is evolving alongside technology. Today, everything is on camera—people want to see what’s happening in the studio, interact via social media, and revisit key moments online. Podcasting has become a natural extension of radio, offering deeper dives into topics.”

“While the live, personalized touch of radio is irreplaceable, integrating digital platforms ensures a richer, more interactive experience. Radio’s evolution—merging traditional broadcast with modern tech—guarantees that it will remain a vibrant and essential medium.”

Celebrate World Radio Day with Martin Bester

As the world celebrates the magic of this medium and its ability to spark conversations and entertain billions, World Radio Day serves as a reminder of the medium’s lasting influence. With voices like Martin Bester leading the way, it remains a vital source of entertainment, connection, and inspiration.

Tune in to Breakfast With Martin Bester, weekdays from 06:00 to 09:00 on Jacaranda FM.
