Biki Baya Release Debut Single: “On My Way (Back Home)”

Rising music collective Biki Baya have dropped their highly anticipated debut single “On My Way (Back Home)” along with a vibrant music video, now available on all digital platforms.

The song carries a story that is equal parts humorous, heartfelt, and deeply human. As frontman Josua Vroegop explains, the inspiration came from a barroom tale in a small Western Cape town where wine flows as freely as conversation.

One man, after another comical defeat by a bottle of pinotage, breaks into song: “On my way, on my way, on my way back home!”

What begins as a drunken anthem becomes something more – a shared chant among strangers, a reminder that though our personal battles can weigh heavily, connection and community make the burden lighter.

“The song is a wink, a smile, and a tear,” says Josua Vroegop. “It reminds us that everyone copes with life’s struggles in different ways. While it touches on the theme of drinking, it’s not about glorifying it. At its core, it’s about the shared human experience of struggle and finding connection, even in unlikely places.”

With the release coinciding with Heritage Month in South Africa, Josua reflects on his own cross-continental heritage.

“My roots are deeply tied to South Africa: my mother comes from Bela Bela and my father from Ladismith (Western Cape). My brother and sister were born in Stellenbosch and when my parents moved to the Netherlands, they originally planned to stay only two years, but then the blessing came along: me.”

“I grew up between the Netherlands and South Africa. Visiting my family in Bela Bela and Ladismith left such a strong impression on me that I eventually wrote a song about it called “Bela Bela.””

“At times, it was confusing to navigate the culture clash I experienced my whole life. In the Netherlands, I often felt like a foreigner, and in South Africa, I felt the same. Over time, I learned that this ‘in-between’ space is a country of its own. My song reflects that experience: it speaks of going home while being stuck at the pub. It’s like a mirror, just don’t ask me which country represents which – I don’t even know the answer to that.”

This duality of identity and belonging finds its way into Biki Baya’s music, giving it both a personal and universal resonance.

More info about Biki Baya

Biki Baya is a dynamic collective that draws inspiration from both South and North African sounds. From the joyful, major-chord-driven songs of the South to the haunting “desert blues” of the North, the band blends Highlife, Desert Blues, and Afrobeat into an irresistibly danceable mix.

Every performance is a journey, powered by infectious vocal lines, exotic grooves, and high energy that make audiences move, connect, and celebrate. Biki Baya’s music doesn’t just entertain – it uplifts and unites.

With “On My Way (Back Home),” Biki Baya introduce themselves not just as musicians, but as storytellers with a sound that’s both uniquely African and universally human.
