In case you didn’t know, this year’s edition of Misty Waters Music Festival happened at Lake Umuzi (near Secunda in Mpumalanga) a few weeks ago (from the 30th of April to the 2nd of May 2026) – and I was there…
Here’s why Misty Waters is the Music Festival that we’ve been waiting for
If you grew up worshipping at the altar of the MK89 channel, you know the drill. My initiation into live music was Oppikoppi Unknown Brother. As a kid, watching The Used and Sum 41 share a stage with the best local acts in the country rewired my brain permanently.
From that point on, festivals weren’t just parties; they were a religious yearly pilgrimage. I planned my leave months in advance, stocked up on the survival essentials, and for one week a year, I could completely ignore the planet and lose myself in the art.
Then came 2020. Since RAMfest, the world has shifted into survival mode. Music festivals went from an annual given to a high-risk luxury, and before I could blink, six years had evaporated.
Lately, my body had been aching to break out of the sterile, post-COVID remote work loop. Staring at screens from home drains the soul after a while. I needed live music. But if I’m honest? I didn’t necessarily want to rummage around in the dust, Mad Max style, to get it.
Enter Misty Waters.
Making the drive out of Pretoria, I saw this Mpumalanga weekender as the perfect opportunity to scratch the six-year itch. What I didn’t expect was for Secunda to completely rewrite my definition of what a South African music festival can feel like.
First off, throw away your preconceptions of small-town logistics. Secunda is remarkably clean, welcoming, and clearly geared for visitors. Finding the venue was as simple as following the Misty Waters signs straight to the Lake Umuzi Waterfront.
The venue itself is a revelation. It feels less like a temporary squatter camp of tents and more like a proper holiday resort that happens to have a blistering rock line-up. Misty Waters music festival features wonderfully curated experiences around the waterfront, making it an absolute delight to just move through the space.
But the real genius of Misty Waters is the programming. The festival manages to perfectly balance the nostalgia of old Oppikoppi favourites with the adrenaline of new blood. And they’ve solved the ultimate festival headache: the timetable clash.
The Fringe festival runs in tandem with the main stage, housed inside a gorgeous theatre. There are no overlaps. You can grab a bite from the vendors (who are easily accessible thanks to the festival’s manageable, growing size), sit down in a beautiful venue, and soak in a theatrical music experience before heading back out to the main stage. All music, zero compromises.
Because the accommodation is right on the field, hanging out with friends is effortless. But the surrounding town offers its own perks.
My fiancé and I opted to stay at a local guest house, and the prices were massively affordable. We even had time to take a morning art class before heading to the stages, try doing that at a dust-bowl festival.
We capped off an incredible weekend with a proper breakfast at the Premiere Hotel on our way out. It was the perfect nightcap to an experience that felt like a hybrid between a relaxing holiday and a pure, unadulterated rock festival.
Here are some photos that my fiance (Mignonsa101) snapped over the weekend at Misty Waters:

Misty Waters is still growing, and right now, it hits that sweet spot of being intimate yet entirely professional. Secunda is standing with open arms, ready to host. If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get back into the festival scene, this is it. Go for the music, stay for the oasis.
