Sam Fender has officially claimed his first U.K. No. 1 single, and he did it in record-breaking fashion. The Newcastle singer-songwriter topped the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart on Friday (20 February) with “Rein Me In”, a powerful duet featuring British artist Olivia Dean.
The achievement is particularly remarkable because the song didn’t rocket straight to the top. Instead, it took the scenic route – a very long scenic route – setting a new record along the way.

A Record-Breaking Climb to the Top
“Rein Me In” has now set the record for the longest climb to No. 1 in U.K. chart history. The single spent 35 consecutive weeks inside the Top 40 before finally reaching the summit.
During that time, the track also logged 18 weeks in the Top 10, gradually building momentum before sealing the deal at No. 1.
The record was previously held by Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”, which took 19 weeks to reach the top spot in 2014. Fender’s steady chart climb effectively doubles that timeline – proof that sometimes patience, persistence and a good song can beat instant viral success.
From Album Track to Chart-Topping Hit
“Rein Me In” originally appeared on Fender’s third studio album, People Watching. The album itself was already a major success, debuting at No. 1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart and becoming the fastest-selling album by a British artist in 2025.
The song gained fresh momentum after Sam Fender performed it live alongside Olivia Dean during his massive 80,000-capacity London Stadium show in June. Following the performance, the track was re-released as a duet version featuring Dean’s vocals and included on the deluxe edition of People Watching.
That new version helped introduce the song to an even wider audience and ultimately pushed it over the line.
Why the Collaboration Works
For Sam Fender, collaborations are most effective when they bring something new to the table. Rather than simply adding another voice to an existing arrangement, he prefers collaborators to reinterpret the song in their own way.
He explained that Dean added an entirely new perspective to the track by writing and performing a fresh verse from a female point of view, giving the song an added emotional layer.
Dean was equally enthusiastic about the project, revealing that “Rein Me In” was already her favourite track on People Watching. The opportunity to write her own verse and contribute to the song made the collaboration particularly meaningful.

A Moment That Reflects Fender’s Growing Influence
The success of “Rein Me In” highlights the momentum behind Sam Fender’s career. Over the past few years he has evolved from indie-rock breakout star to one of the most influential British artists of his generation.
With a chart-topping album, stadium shows and now his first U.K. No. 1 single, the numbers suggest his audience continues to grow – even when the songs take their time climbing the charts.
And in the strange ecosystem of modern music, where viral hits can appear and vanish overnight, a 35-week rise to No. 1 feels almost rebellious. Sometimes a song simply needs time to sink in, find its audience and quietly take over the world.
