TCL has officially introduced its flagship SQD-Mini LED (Super Quantum Dot Mini LED) display technology to the South African market.
As the global leader in Mini LED and ultra-large screen TVs (75”+), TCL aims to set a new benchmark for brightness, colour precision, and contrast in the local premium home entertainment sector.

What is SQD-Mini LED?
SQD-Mini LED represents a significant leap forward in display science. Unlike traditional RGB Mini LED technology – which attempts to modify the light source – SQD-Mini LED utilizes a highly refined blue LED backlight paired with newly formulated quantum dots and TCL’s proprietary Ultra Colour Filter.
This sophisticated structure eliminates colour crosstalk and achieves:
- Up to a 33% boost in colour gamut.
- A 69% improvement in quantum dot accuracy compared to previous generations.
Why it sets a new benchmark
The technology is designed to outperform both conventional Mini LED and OLED display types in key areas:
Ultimate Brightness: Flagship models can reach a staggering 10,000 nits of peak brightness, ensuring incredible detail in both bright and dark scenes, making it ideal for sunny South African living environments.
Ultimate Contrast: With up to 20,736 local dimming zones (on the largest models) and TCL’s All-Domain Halo Control Technology, the displays deliver deeper blacks and reduced haloing for a cinematic experience.
Ultimate Colour: The technology achieves full coverage of the BT.2020 colour space, the industry’s highest standard for colour accuracy in Hollywood mastering.
Durability: Unlike OLED, SQD-Mini LED offers greater long-term durability and is completely free from the risk of permanent burn-in.
Enhanced Features
Immersive Audio: Higher-end models feature audio systems professionally tuned by Bang & Olufsen, providing powerful, spatial sound to match the visual performance.
Superior Design: Engineered glass and advanced anti-reflection coatings ensure crisp, clear images with minimal glare, even in bright daylight.
Accessibility: TCL is focusing on making this flagship-level performance more attainable, bringing high-end home cinema to a wider segment of South African households.
“South African consumers should never have to compromise on picture quality when investing in a premium home entertainment experience,” says Mike Chen, General Manager at TCL South Africa. “TCL is proud to bring SQD-Mini LED to the local market, delivering breakthrough brightness, cinema-grade colour precision, and immersive audio in a way that makes true flagship performance more accessible than ever.”
The technology will debut across TCL’s 2026 flagship television lineup, alongside selected Audio by Bang & Olufsen models and connected Google smart home appliances.
Retail availability and pricing details for the local market are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
