Audio Girl, the pioneering movement empowering women in music and audio technology across Africa, has officially launched the Audio Girl Membership – a bold, continent-wide initiative rewriting the story for women in sound, production, and the music business.
Based in Lagos, Nigeria, their on a mission to close the gender gap in technical and creative music roles, building a virtual sisterhood of empowered creators-one Audio Girl at a time.

Uniting Women Across the Music Industry
In August, Audio Girl Africa hosted the All Women Everything Music Business Panel & Workshop at Coca Lounge in Melville, Johannesburg.
The event brought together top industry leaders to unpack the challenges facing women in the music business and explore real strategies for change. The discussion was moderated by Kgomotso Mokobi, Senior Brand Lead Strategist at Warner Music Africa.
Globally, women represent less than 5% of audio engineers – and the numbers are even lower in Africa. Across Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa, women in audio remain underrepresented and under-supported.
According to UNESCO’s 2023 report, only one in ten women in Africa’s creative industries receives adequate training or mentorship to enter technical roles like production or sound engineering.
Since its inception, Audio Girl has changed that reality – training over 1,200 women in more than 15 African countries through bootcamps, workshops, and mentorship programmes.
Closing the Gap and Creating Opportunity
Born out of frustration but fuelled by purpose, Audio Girl was created to ensure African women are no longer unheard, unseen, or underestimated in the music industry.
Through hands-on training in audio engineering, production, and music business, alongside mentorship pods and job placement opportunities, Audio Girl equips women to own their sound, lead their careers, and shape the industry.
Today, the growing Audio Girl community boasts over 5,000 members supported by more than 50 volunteer mentors, facilitators, and industry partners.
Audio Girl is More Than a Network – It’s a Movement
At its core, Audio Girl is more than a professional network – it’s a movement. Membership offers entry into a self-sustaining ecosystem where women create opportunities, share resources, and lead across every sector of the music world.
Over 40 programmes and initiatives have already been launched, combining grassroots energy with digital innovation to build lasting impact.
“Membership is not just joining another community – it’s joining a movement of women building the future of African music together,” says Phebean (Febe) Oluwagbemi, Founder of Audio Girl Africa.
From Frustration to Legacy
Audio Girl is for the woman who’s tired of waiting for permission – so she builds her own stage. It’s not charity; it’s strategy. It’s not just learning; it’s legacy.
With new chapters launching in Lagos, Accra, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, Audio Girl is shaping a generation of African women who will define both the sound and business of music, locally and globally.
The Future: A Women-Led Audio Hub in Lagos
As Audio Girl expands, the organisation is now building Africa’s first women-led audio production studio and training hub in Lagos – a flagship space that will serve as the epicentre of technical empowerment for women in music.
The facility is secured, and the goal is clear: to complete the build and launch by 2026, unlocking access for over 200 trained women in its first year.
The Facility Will Include:
- Training Room: A hands-on space for live sound engineering, music production, and professional mixing workshops.
- Content Room: A hub for podcast production, course filming, and creative storytelling – amplifying African women’s voices across digital media.
- Recording Studio: A world-class space for women to produce, collaborate, and release music, ensuring long-term sustainability for the Audio Girl movement.
Join the Movement
Audio Girl is calling on visionary partners, brands, and industry leaders to help fund essential equipment – from consoles and microphones to acoustic treatment and infrastructure – to make this groundbreaking hub a reality.
