Free Machine Shares Lyric Video for “So Long Now”

South African alt-rock band Free Machine has unveiled the lyric video for “So Long Now”, a standout track from their debut album Dead Echoes.

With its gritty, 90s-inspired sound and emotionally charged message, the song is a raw, honest anthem for anyone who’s had to walk away from one-sided connections—whether in relationships, friendships, or creative partnerships.

Free Machine

Free Machine are Channeling the Spirit of 90s Grunge

Free Machine draws sonic inspiration from grunge legends like Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Big Wreck, while injecting their own modern take on the genre.

Guitarist Clint Jurgens shares that the song was born from a gut-level musical instinct—an “uplifting, uptempo feeling” that led to the creation of the driving opening riff. That instinctive approach to songwriting is a signature of the band’s process, grounded in authenticity and emotional resonance.

“So Long Now” blends a heady mix of catchy riffs, off-kilter melodies, and lyrical depth. While it may sound like a classic breakup track, the band reveals that the song was inspired by a personal falling out with a former bandmate—someone who failed to value the friendship and shared vision.

The lyrics reflect that tension with maturity, capturing both the bittersweetness of letting go and the liberation that follows.

Created Remotely, Driven by Passion

Dead Echoes is more than just a debut album—it’s a DIY triumph. Free Machine recorded the entire project remotely, with members never meeting in person during production. Their ability to translate shared influences into a cohesive sound speaks to their deep musical chemistry and commitment to creative freedom.

This unconventional approach underscores the band’s experience and credibility within the independent music scene. With each member bringing years of songwriting and instrumental expertise to the table, Free Machine delivers a polished yet unfiltered sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

A Project Fueled by Love for Music, Not Marketing

Free Machine is proudly independent. There are no PR teams, label deals, or commercial ambitions—just a group of passionate musicians making music for fellow grunge fans. Their transparency and dedication to craft highlight their trustworthiness as artists, while their refusal to conform to trends speaks to their authoritativeness within their niche.

“There’s no bigger picture, no marketing pushes—just the joy of sharing our sound.”

If you’re craving honest, emotionally intelligent rock that doesn’t follow the rules, Dead Echoes is a must-listen
