DJ and producer DJ Moma has released his latest single, “Asilali,” taken from his album Jozi Love Affair. The project is deeply influenced by his time living and working in Johannesburg, capturing the spirit and rhythm of the city’s music scene.
The single features Baby S.O.N (real name Phelela Gcwelumusa Ziphakeme Mathonsi), an Amapiano singer, songwriter and DJ from Mandeni. Known for blending soulful melodies with Amapiano production, his music leans heavily into emotional, story-driven songwriting.

Nicknamed “Son of Natal,” Baby S.O.N has been steadily building his profile since launching his career in 2018. He gained widespread attention with the hit “Dalie,” which saw strong traction on TikTok, and has since collaborated with artists including Musa Keys, Yumbs, Zādok and AKA.
“Asilali” is built around the pulse of Johannesburg’s nightlife and evolving dance culture. The track reflects the energy of the city, blending seamlessly into the broader sonic world of Jozi Love Affair, which draws from Amapiano, Afrohouse and other distinctly South African sounds that continue to resonate both locally and globally.
A Global Artist with Local Influence
Originally from Queens, DJ Moma has built an international reputation as a DJ, producer and curator, including his well-known Everyday People event series. However, Jozi Love Affair represents a more grounded and personal body of work.
The album was shaped by his extended time in South Africa between 2017 and 2020, including six months spent living in Johannesburg. During this period, he immersed himself in the local music ecosystem, connecting with artists, producers and dance floors across the city.
South Africa’s Growing Global Impact
Reflecting on his experience, DJ Moma draws parallels between South Africa’s current dance scene and the rise of house music in the United States during the 1990s.
He points to how cities like New York, Detroit and Chicago once developed distinct sounds that went on to influence global music culture, noting that a similar movement is now happening with Amapiano and Afrohouse. He also highlights the strong support local audiences show for homegrown music, creating a unique connection between DJs and crowds.
His first visit to Johannesburg in 2017 introduced him to early Amapiano tracks like “Oe Batla Kae,” sparking a deeper exploration of the genre that continues to shape his perspective on South Africa’s role in global dance music.
DJ Moma delivers a Track That Captures the Moment
With “Asilali,” DJ Moma brings that journey full circle. The single captures both the energy of Johannesburg and the collaborative spirit of its music scene, offering a track that feels rooted in place while speaking to a global audience.
You can stream the track on Spotify and all other music streaming platforms.
