Emerging singer-songwriter, Ruben Gerritz is set to capture music lovers with his latest single, ‘Smell Like Vanilla’. Crafted with passion and creativity, this track promises a unique blend of musical influences, transporting listeners into a world of love, encouragement, and melodious magic.
The inspiration behind the single came back in 2019 and from the most unexpected source – vanilla wafer cubes. A casual remark from a bandmate about Ruben Gerritz smelling like vanilla sparked the idea for the unforgettable hook, “You smell like Vanilla.”
The song narrates a love story set against the backdrop of a ‘prom’ evening, where one person is hesitant to step into the unknown. Through poignant lyrics and soulful melodies, Ruben shares a message of love, support, and the reassurance that no one is alone when faced with challenges.
Ruben wears many hats as the creative force behind the single. He not only wrote and produced the entire track but also collaborated with Rob Stemmett., who contributed his bass-playing expertise. Stemmett., a seasoned performer, has been an integral part of Ruben Gerritz’s musical journey for the past four years.
Defining his sound is something Ruben finds to be challenging as he explains, “I prefer to let listeners interpret and feel the music in their own way.” He does, however, draw inspiration from the likes of Beatenberg and John Mayer, while creating his own unique blend of, what he describes as, a pop/afro-pop sound.

Ruben Gerritz is no stranger to the music scene. In 2019, his single “Take it Slow” transcended borders and landed on campus radio in Germany while he continued to garner local success with appearances on Expresso Morning Show and two sold-out shows at Die Boer theatre. Continuing his success with another release, ‘Don’t Leave Me Alone’, Ruben garnered attention across the globe again, but this time with a feature in Los Angeles.
Coming from a deeply musical family, Ruben’s journey with music began at the age of 12 when he picked up the guitar. Despite initially considering various career paths, music remained a constant in his life.
There is no sense of slowing down for Ruben anytime soon with big plans for the future, including multiple releases lined up for the coming year. With three songs ready for release and more in the pipeline, each track promises a unique story and vibe that will resonate with audiences far and wide.
